Spectral evolution of magnetic flares and time lags in accreting black hole sources

چکیده
We present a model for the short timescale spectral variability of accreting black holes. It describes well the time-averaged spectra as well as temporal characteristics such as powerdensity spectrum, time/phase lags, and coherence function of Cygnus X-1. We assume that X/γ-rays are produced in compact magnetic flares at radii <∼ 100GM/c from the central black hole. The tendency for magnetic loops to inflate and detach from the underlying accretion disc causes the spectrum of a flare to evolve from soft to hard due to the decrease of the feedback from the cold disc, so causing time delays between hard and soft photons. We identify the observed time lags with the evolution timescales of the flares, which are of the order of the Keplerian timescale. We model the overall temporal variability using a pulse avalanche model in which each flare has a certain probability to trigger a neighbouring flare, thus occasionally producing long avalanches. The duration of the avalanches determines the Fourier frequencies where most of the power emerges.

Understanding Spectral Variability and Time Lags in Accreting Black Holes
I review the temporal/spectral data of accreting black hole sources paying most attention to the properties of the temporal variability such as photon energy dependent autoand cross-correlation functions, average shot profiles and hardness ratios, and the Fourier frequency dependent time/phase lags. These statistics characterize spectral changes at short time scales that are otherwise impossibl...
متن کاملConstraining global parameters of accreting black holes by modeling magnetic flares
We present modeling results for the reprocessed radiation expected from magnetic flares above AGN accretion disks. Relativistic corrections for the orbital motion of the flare and for the curved space-time in the vicinity of the black hole are taken into account. We investigate the local emission spectra, as seen in a frame co-orbiting with the disk, and the observed spectra at infinity. We inv...
متن کاملGlobal Three-Dimensional MHD Simulations of Black Hole Accretion Disks: X-ray Flares in the Plunging Region
We present the results of three-dimensional global resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of black hole accretion flows. General relativistic effects are simulated by using the pseudo-Newtonian potential. Initial state is an equilibrium model of a torus threaded by weak toroidal magnetic fields. As the magnetorotational instability (MRI) grows in the torus, mass accretes to the black h...
متن کاملMeasurement of Hard Lags and Coherences in the X-Ray Flux of Accreting Neutron Stars and Comparison with Accreting Black Holes
Using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer we have measured lags of the 9 to 33 keV photons relative to the 2 to 9 keV photons in the timing noise between 0.01 and 100 Hz in the accreting neutron stars 4U 0614+09 and 4U 1705–44. We performed similar measurements on the accreting black hole candidates CygX–1 and GX339–4 as a comparison. During the observations these sources were all in low (hard) sta...
متن کاملTime Lags in Compact Objects: Constraints on the Emission Models
Accreting black holes and neutron stars in their hard (low) state show not only very similar X/γ-ray spectra but also that the behaviour of their light curves is quite similar which can be quantified as having similar power-density spectra and Fourier-frequency-dependent time/phase lags. Taken together this argues for a common mechanism of the X/γ-ray production in these objects. This mechanism...
